基督敎神學槪論 An Introduction to Christian Theology

The first systematic theology written in Korean, in its first English translation. A preview of the work in progress.

In 1939 the Methodist Theological Seminary in Seoul published Jeong Kyeong-ok's Introduction to Christian Theology. It is generally counted the first systematic theology written in Korean. Jeong had studied under Harris Franklin Rall at Garrett Biblical Institute, and he described his own position as "conservative in faith and liberal in theology." The book runs to 533 pages in eight parts. It moves from theology and religion through Christianity, God, humanity, sin and salvation, and it ends, unusually, with the doctrine of Christ. An appendix gives Jeong's own creed in seventy-one articles.

This translation is being made directly from the 1939 printing, page by page. Each page is transcribed exactly as printed, in its mixed script of Hanja and Hangul, and then translated. The notes record misprints, identify the people and books Jeong cites (many of them read through Japanese translations), and explain the words whose English rendering hides a choice. The complete translation will be published in print by Wroot Press. The chapters below are working drafts, offered to show the direction of the work.
